How the math works

Multiply length × width for the area, add the waste margin (10% straight, 15% diagonal or herringbone), then divide by the area of one tile and round up. A 12×12 in tile is exactly 1 sq ft, which makes it the easiest mental check: a 10×8 ft bathroom floor is 80 sq ft → 88 tiles with straight layout → 9 boxes of 10.

Buy everything from one batch: like paint dye lots, tile shades vary between production runs. And keep the leftover tiles: a repair with a discontinued line means retiling the whole floor.

Common questions

How much extra tile should I buy?
Plan 10% waste for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal or herringbone: cuts at the edges, breakage, and pattern matching all eat tile. Keeping a few spares also saves you when a tile cracks years later and the line is discontinued.

How many 12×12 tiles per square foot?
Exactly one before waste: a 12×12 in tile is one square foot. A 100 sq ft floor needs 100 tiles plus waste, so 110 with a straight layout.

Do I count the grout gap?
For estimation, no. The gap slightly reduces tile count but the effect is smaller than the waste margin, and estimating without it keeps you safely on the extra side.

How many tiles come in a box?
It varies by size and brand: commonly 8 to 12 for 12×12, and 5 to 8 for larger formats. Check the box label and enter it in the calculator to get boxes instead of loose tiles.
