Always order all rolls at once: dye lots differ between batches.

How the math works

Wall area is width × height, minus half of each opening (installers keep the other half as trimming margin). Each roll has a gross coverage (about 60 sq ft for a US double roll, 57 for a European roll) but matching a pattern wastes the top of every strip, so the calculator reduces usable coverage by 10–25% depending on the repeat. Divide area by usable coverage and round up: that is your roll count.

The classic mistake is buying by gross coverage with a 24-inch repeat: on a full room that is easily one or two rolls short, and the reorder arrives in a different dye lot.

Common questions

How much does one roll of wallpaper cover?

A standard US double roll (27 in × 27 ft) covers about 60 sq ft on paper: but with trimming and matching you should count on 50 usable sq ft. A European roll (53 cm × 10 m) covers roughly 57 sq ft gross, around 44 usable.

What is pattern repeat and why does it matter?

It is the vertical distance before the design repeats. Every strip must be aligned to the one beside it, so with a large repeat you throw away paper at the top of each strip. A 12 in repeat typically adds 10–15% waste; a 24 in repeat can add 20% or more.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

For small openings, most installers do not: that margin becomes your trimming waste. This calculator subtracts half of each opening as a compromise, which matches how the pros estimate.

How many rolls for one accent wall?

A typical 12 ft accent wall with 8 ft ceilings is about 96 sq ft, which is 2 double rolls with a small repeat, or 3 with a large repeat. Always round up: dye lots vary between orders, and running out mid-wall shows.
